What is it about Mr. Darcy that girls so readily fall in love with him ? The perfect looks? The Yearly income of 10,000 Pounds (which was considered to be a very handsome income during the late 18th century)? Or his undying and intense love for Miss Bennet ??
Anyways, I would not go into in-depth character assessment as it has already been done so many times by Jane Austen's fans :D
For the past one month, I have been watching different versions of pride and prejudice which has been made till now. It all started with PnP 1980 series, which though close to the book lacked the intense feeling of love and passion that the characters showed in the book. Though i loved the character of Lady Chatherine De'Burgh :) and Mrs. Bennet. But i would not say the same thing about Miss Elizabeth Bennet or Mr. Darcy and other characters.Then the Keira Knightley's 2005's much Hyped PnP. and what a disappointment it was :( Mr. Darcy was dull and Keira as Lizzy was not a very good choice. The story was awkward and characters didnt give justice to the Real PnP.
1940's PnP is the worst so far. Though the script writer tried to include the main plot with different settings, it failed to impress me. The story was haphazard , it had more American touch than English.
Then came "Lost in Austen" the 2008 series with a modern-time travelling twist to the plot. Jane austen will probably grunt in her grave if she would see how the script writer of this series successfully managed to show Wickham in a positive light.
AT LAST, the pride and prejudice I had been waiting for. It came in the form of 1995 famous PnP series with Collin Firth and Jennifer Ehle in the main role :). Not only did it capture the story with Lizzy's point of view, but it also did not make Mr. Darcy fade in the background. The Series successfully captured my interests in few Darcy moments so perfectly played by Collin Firth. Especially the swim Darcy takes after his long journey and the intense passion he holds within him when he first proposes to Lizzy !! *me dies*
Jennifer too portrayed the image of Lizzy well. Her prejudice against Mr. Darcy so well played that i would love to give a standing applause to her peformance.
Other characters esp. Lydia and Mrs Bennet are worth watching !!! Also , the perfect capturing of the slower and peaceful times of the 18th Century England held my interest !!!
In the end i'd say that whoever attempts to make PnP in the future should take notes form 1995 PnP series!!! But Collin Firth is so far the BEST Mr. Darcy and whenver in future I read PnP (yet again) i think i'll imagine him in the role :) :D <3
